Didst Thou Know?

Didst thou know, oh Bethlehem
When travelers bustled by

Didst thou know, oh Bethlehem
When travelers bustled by
That one still night The mighty God
Would in thy borders lie?

No room O town of Bethlehem
He owns each hill and den
Yet in thy stable manger
Begins His walk with men

How small O town of Bethlehem
That fragile, infant child
Through whom mankind for ages hence
With God is reconciled

Thy cold reply “no room for thee”
Through ages echo’d on
O Bethlehem, t’was God Himself
Thy answer fell upon

No place to lay my head, He said
No home to call my own
A cross they hailed His body to
And thorns were made His crown

O Bethlehem forever
Deliverance is proclaimed
For all the sin from Adam hence
Was on His body laid

But we like thee, O Bethlehem
Must bid the Master in
O open all the stubborn gates
For the eternal King.
