We Can

We can have sorrow and rejoice,
In praises lift our faltering voice.

We can have sorrow and rejoice,
In praises lift our faltering voice.

We can be weak and yet be strong.
We can have suffering with a song.

We can be chastened and yet cleave.
We can be sifted, yet believe.

We can, for grace is given indeed
To those who know how deep their need.

We can, though pressed on every side,
Though wounded, weak, and sorely tried.

Though burdens weigh the aching breast,
Though vainly seeks the heart for rest,

Though hopes are crushed and prayers denied,
Though tears on burning cheeks abide,

E’en yet we can.  In Christ we can,
Who strengtheneth the inner man.

In Him we can whose grace exceeds
The deepest and most crying needs,

The wildest fears of fearful hearts,
The firiest of fiery darts.

We can, though oft we think we can’t.
We can, though hard with pain we pant.

We can go on.  Go on we must.
We can, if we will only trust.
