TO A FATHER - Gunerius C. Lee

I would not dare in oral words to voice
The thoughts so near the heart—
A father’s thoughts—by father understood—
Of fathers true such feelings are a part.

A son whose ways seem foolish, wrong and wild
Will create heartache, sorrow, fear;
Advice seems futile, he will not be led
He is so deaf, he will not hear.

From earthly father’s roof he may depart
To wander freely as he will
The roof of heaven though is over him
And surely will protect him still.

I know thy case before His throne is laid
Who causes prodigals to pause
He will remind them of the pleasant days
Of loving kindness, lenient laws.

The Lord is patient. He will bide His time.
To us it may be hard to bear,
But He has promised He will give us strength
If we but seek through faithful prayer.

We cannot fathom with our earthly mind
The way of God, but we do know
That they are good, for He it is
Who on believers blessings will bestow.

Small comfort can a fellow sinner give
To one who suffers as you do;
But be assured, our prayers tho’weak
Ascend on high for both your son and you.
